Day 5: This one is in honour of tonight’s full Supermoon and lunar eclipse.

In August of 1835, the New York Sun newspaper published a series of articles that ended up becoming one of the greatest media hoaxes of all time. The series of six stories purportedly described the discovery of life on the moon by the famous British astronomer, Sir John Herschel.

Long and rambling, the articles unveiled one strange revelation after another about the moon’s primitive but intelligent inhabitants and their fantastical habitat: the Biped Beaver, the Vespertilio-homo otherwise known as the “man-bat”, a mysterious abandoned temple built of polished sapphire, and more.
